You will notice that our newsletter has a new format this time.  I am happy to announce that Linda Theil has accepted the responsibility of newsletter editor for the Historic Pathwalkers.  This is a welcome change and I would personally like to thank Linda for taking on the job.

Along with this comes a change in distribution as well.  It will be mailed only to those who do not have computer access. This will cut down on expenses as well as time and effort in producing the newsletter.  As always, member contributions are welcome.

You have all received copies of our proceedings at the annual meeting in July.  We were encouraged by the attendance or our Regional Director,  Leonard Wojtysiak who in addition to Wayne Fieldhouse gave a presentation to those present.  As yet, the core group has not come to a consensus as to the direction we want to go and as a result we did not elect new officers. We have also suspended the collection of dues for the same reason although we will collect a $10 initial fee from new members.   We will keep you posted as to what happens next.

Walking Mason

Linda Theil, Editor

The Historic Pathwalkers, will sponsor a 5K or 10K AVA sanctioned walk on October 4 in Mason, MI. The Girl Scout 2003-04 Walk Together patch will be available. Cost of credit and patch is $4; credit only is $3. A limited number of Volksport Month patches will also be available. Start times from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., finish by 4 p.m. at Keans Store, 406 S. Jefferson. The walk is through downtown Mason, shaded neighborhoods, parks, and "Antique Town".  Girl Scout troops are asked to register by September 20 with trailmaster Pat Korloch. For more information and fliers/registration forms, contact Pat.

This is a really lovely walk. Mason is the Ingham County seat with a fine Nineteenth Century courthouse in the town square. The trail is a figure eight passing through the downtown so that all ages and fitness levels can easily participate in a 5K if they

wish.

If you'd like information about other area attractions and/or walks, please feel free to contact me or Pat Korloch (below). If you're interested in antiquing, there are antiques malls in Williamston (Williamston exit of I-96 one exit east of the Mason exit) and Howell (right off the Pontiac/M-59 exit off I-96 about another 20 minutes east of Williamston)

Help at Mason

We've made it really easy to help on this event - the start point, checkpoint, and finish table are all at the same location. To insure we have enough people to cover all the roles, we would like to have three people at each of three shifts. The first shift is from 9:45 am to noon and will likely be mostly start point and checkpoint duties. The second shift is noon to 2:00 pm and will be a combination of all three duties. The third shift is from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm or when the last walker returns, whichever is first, and will be mostly finish table and checkpoint.

We already have two volunteers for each shift, so we just need one more for each shift. Please contact me to let me know when you can help.

This arrangement should allow all volunteers to work and walk on the same day, without making a separate trip to walk.

The latest wellness promotion from Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan is WalkingWorks. Perhaps you've heard of it since Ernie Harwell is the spokesperson and has led several events. The idea is to encourage people to lead healthier lives, including more physical activity in their lives.

When the walk was in Lansing, it started after a Lansing Lugnuts baseball game. How appropriate! Hundreds of people joined Ernie in walking three miles. Pedometers were given to the first 300 registrants and other registrants received t-shirts. Check the web for this program so you, too, can walk with Ernie.

P.S. The state of Michigan also has a walking program called Walk Michigan
