Saint Louis Walkers – TRAD
Start Location: Kirkwood Trailhead of Grant’s Trail – North End – 601 S. Holmes Avenue
POC: DeAnne Brown – @
All walkers will pass the historic Father Dickson African-American Cemetery and the Thomas Sappington Home and Museum. The 10K walkers will additionally pass White Haven, home of President Ulysses S. Grant, now a National Historic Site, and Grant’s Farm where President Grant himself built the four-room log cabin in the 1850s.
Most of Grant’s land was acquired by the Busch Family in 1903. The Busches owned the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Company until 2008. Visitors during the summer months tour the estate by tram to see the Clydesdale horses, and many other grazing animals. Walkers will pass by the horse pastures and will most likely spot some Clydesdales.
Grant’s Trail qualifies for the Rails-to-Trails Special Program. President Grant approved the construction of the Pacific Railroad which ran through his property. The “First Railroad West of the Mississippi” broke ground there in 1851.
The entire Grant’s Trail is 9.9 miles, but we are walking only the North End. Both the 5- and 10K out-and-back routes provide easily seen turn-arounds.
All historic sites on the trail can be toured except for Grant’s Farm which is open for free only during the summer months or for special seasonal events and activities when tickets are required.
