In January 2020, the Board of Directors of the AVA: America’s Walking Club, declared the first seven days of April to be “National Walking Week” which would include the traditional “National Walking Day” sponsored by the American Heart Association from 2007 to 2019.

We will be walking 6k in Morris, IL. The trail will take you into historic neighborhoods and the downtown business area (listed on the National Register of Historic Places). You will walk on the Illinois Michigan Canal path, along the Illinois River. After completing the walk, we will lunch and walk in Wilmington, IL at Midewin Tallgrass Prairie.

We will start the walk after noon lunch at Nelly’s, 110 Bridge Street in Wilmington. We will meet outside the Midewin Visitor Center at 1 pm (30239 South Illinois Route 53). The Visitor Center will not be open, so online registration is recommended. No stamp will be available.
We plan to walk 5k as a group, feel free to explore the 33 miles of trails on your own.
Midewin is the first national and largest tallgrass prairie restoration effort east of the Mississippi River. Trails are on old roads and railroad beds surfaced with crushed gravel and mowed grass.
Walks pass through large open fields and restored prairie. On the trails you can view and pass old ammunition bunkers–the remnants of the long-closed
Joliet Army Ammunition Plant, and Midewin’s bison herd.

The Frankfort walk takes you on Old Plank Road, a rails-to-trails quiet tree-lined trail, through the Frankfort historic downtown area and through a newer suburban neighborhood. Start is at the Red Trolley Barn, 11 S White Street. Both a 5k and 10k distance will be offered. On-site registration and stamp will be available. Through new-home subdivisions.

Oak Brook, IL – April 5th

Fullersburg Woods in Oak Brook is a part of the DuPage County Forest Preserve District. The trail through Fullersburg Woods follows Salt Creek through woods and prairie. In the 1930s, the Forest Preserve was the site of a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp. There is a wonderful CCC-built Visitor Center/Nature Center at the beginning of the trail, and a number of CCC-era stone and wood shelters scattered along the way. There are frequent sightings of delightful woodland creatures along the way, and a large variety of migrating and resident birds. The trail leads to Graue Mill and Museum – a working grist mill and a National Historic Landmark. The museum offers the exhibit “Graue Mill and the Road to Freedom” which uses photographs, documents, a computer interactive system and additional displays to illustrate the issue of slavery, the Underground Railroad and the importance of Graue Mill and DuPage County in assisting fugitive slaves to escape to freedom. The 10K trail also passes the Oak Brook Public Library, Butler National Golf Course, and Oak Brook Golf Course, using part of the Salt Creek Greenway Trail before
returning to Fullersburg Woods

This walk is at Busse Woods Forest Preserve. 5k and 12k options are available. Busse Woods/Ned Brown Preserve is 3,558 acres and part of the Cook County Forest preserve system. Since 1925, a small elk herd has inhabited a 17-acre enclosed pasture in Busse Woods. The walk is a 12k loop on a paved bicycle trail through Busse’s upland forest, an ancient remnant, full of tall red oaks and hickories, maple, ash, basswood, elm and very large ironwoods. The walk passes the elk enclosure, boating area, dam, and various picnic areas. The 5k walk is an out-and-back walk to the elk enclosure.

Geneva is a quaint, historic town with many eating and shopping opportunities along the walk. The 5k route takes you to the Fox River, downtown on the Lincoln Heritage Highway (LHH), and past beautiful homes in the Historic District. The 10K route passes interesting shops and restaurants on 3rd St, past the train depot and the Kane County Government Center to a railroad/pedestrian bridge over the Fox River. A hike/bike trail through Forest Preserves and a park take you along the river and back to Geneva’s Historic District. Meet at the Geneva Public Library, 227 South 7th Street. After the walk, enjoy lunch with the group, or visit one of Geneva’s many shops.

The group walk at Pokagon State Park will start at the lobby of the Potawatomi Inn at 10 am on Saturday, April 1. You may do 5 or 10 K (3.1 or 6.2 miles) The trails wander a wide variety of shady forests, wetland boardwalks, and lakeside paths over hilly and flat terrain. For more details click here.

The group walk at Spring Mill State Park starts at 10 am on Saturday, April 1.We will meet in front of the Grissom Memorial for the hikes Please arrive at the site at least 15 minutes before the start time to register. Members from the Bedford Hiking Club will lead two groups on the Spring Mill Volkswalk. There will be 10K (6.2 miles) and 5K (3.1 miles) hikes offered. Enjoy shaded trails through a beautiful old-growth forest, restored pioneer village, and a working grist mill over 200 years old. The trail also goes by streams, sinkholes, caves, and around a small lake. The volkswalk includes Trail 3, Trail 5, and parts of Trail 4 and 2. See more details by clicking here.

The group walk at Fort Harrison State Park will start at the Delaware Lake parking lot at pm on Sunday, April 3. See details and driving directions by clicking here. You may do a 5 or 10 K walk (3.1 or 6.2 miles). The trails are mostly on natural paths and some park road surfaces. Enjoy a unique experience in a beautiful rustic setting within a major metropolitan area. The park has challenging trails with some unexpected vistas.

Have a serene sojourn with the Hoosier Hikers on this historic university campus to become acquainted with the benefits of regular participation in walking and other Volkssporting activities. The Hoosier Hikers, the only club in North Central Indiana affiliated with the American Volkssport Association (AVA) will host a Guided Walk of 7 and 11 kilometers on Friday, April 7, at the club’s South Bend/ Notre Dame Year-Round Walk (MA23/Y291). Registration for this activity is required, and will be completed on-site at the Start Point, which will be in the Visitor Parking Lot behind (to the East of) Walsh Hall near the intersection of Holy Cross Drive and Eddy Street/Saint Andre Way at the University of Notre Dame. Because this is a recognized holiday weekend, there will be no parking fee on the day of the event.

Leave the winter behind and join us in a beautiful spring walk that goes through parks, by the Huron River and into the great college town of the University of Michigan. AVA (America’s Walking Club) is all about fun, fitness and friendship. To celebrate National Walking week we will be stopping on our walk to have brunch at the Avalon Restaurant which is on both the 6K and 10K serving great food, beverages and pastries. You can either have breakfast, early lunch, or coffee and pastry. Or if you would rather just keeping walking you are welcome to keep on going. Come meet new friends and catch up with old friends that you haven’t seen since before winter set in. This walk follows streets through the newly renovated Schenectady downtown, Union College, and the Stockade Historic District. Founded by the Dutch in 1660 for many years the settlement was surrounded by a wooden stockade, making it the only walled city in the Mohawk Valley. After the French destroyed it in 1690, Schenectady was enlarged and was stockaded again. The stockade is long gone, but this old section of the city is still called the Stockade area. Alternate starting point for this 4/2 walk will be behind St John the Evangelist Church 808 Union St.

This walk qualifies for the following AVA Special Programs: Airports – Celebrating American Flight, Centurion, Rails-to-Trails, Rockin’ Around the Clock, Town Halls/City Halls, Walking with American Veterans, Par for the Course, Walking the United States (Ohio), Walking the USA A-Z (N = New Carlisle), and IVV-Americas. Note: All Special Programs are on both loops, except for the Clock is on the North loop, and the Airport is on South loop.
Trail Description: This Trail is Rated 1A. The trail is suitable for wheelchairs, strollers, and wagons with caution. The two 5K loops both start at Smith Park Shelter House, and will be on city streets, sidewalks and the multipurpose path. One 5K will take you to the Historic New Carlisle downtown area. The other 5K will go South, and be partially on the multipurpose path, known as “Tecumseh Trail”.

Saturday, April 1, 2023 at the Castroville Regional Park, 816 Alsace Street, Castroville. This walk is in conjunction with the 12th Tour de Castroville, an annual family event. Walk through “The Little Alsace of Texas” founded in 1844 by Henri Castro. Registration for the volkssport walk is separate from the Tour de Castroville. Come to the Pathfinder’s start/finish table under the tent. Finish by 2:00 pm.
